Sleeping Beauty
Approx. Run Time
Act 1: 75 minutes and Act 2: 60 minutes.
Plot Summary
‘Sleeping Beauty’, a tale that is at least 300 years old and beloved by generations. A story of Love triumphing over Evil, and of good and bad magic. All told with a twinkle of humour, this pantomime has plenty of strong characters for cast and director to get their teeth into, it is designed to be easy to stage and, should you require them, it comes with a host of free extras: appropriate sound effects, song suggestions, and a props list. But most importantly the script is fast-paced with a joke on almost every line and great opportunities for audience interaction. There are two examples from the script on the website, should you wish to get a taster, and a perusal script in PDF format is available on request.
Cast of Characters
Rosamund (Sleeping Beauty) (f): Lively and happy young woman, enjoying her life, clever and quick-witted, mischievous, particularly towards the Prince. In order to protect her from worry, the secret of Malevolent’s curse, is being kept from Rosamund, which ultimately proves to be a bad idea.
Prince Richard (m or f playing m): Similar age to Rosamund, happy and enjoying his life, not very quick-thinking, but generally well-meaning. A bit of an easy target for Rosamund to tease. Ultimately, he has to step up and save the day by rescuing her and all the other inhabitants of the castle.
Malevolent (f): The baddie, an evil fairy. Glamorous but exuding supressed anger, with a need to exert her authority over others. Disdainful of everyone, particularly her henchmen, the King, the Queen, and the three good fairies. She will do anything to hurt the Princess and the inhabitants of the castle, as payback for their perceived insult of not inviting her to the party.
Dame Norma Snoze (could be f but preferably m playing f): Castle cook, good rapport with audience, extrovert, good comic timing. She is usually stressed out and overworked. Motherly character to Muddles. She has to be a busty character because it is a plot device.
Muddles (f or m – script is written as female, would need minor changes in pronouns): Good rapport with audience, sidekick to the Dame, not terribly bright, but has a good heart. Unfortunately Muddles is the author of the Kingdom’s problems when he/she fails to deliver the invitation to Malevolent.
Fairy Alexa (f): The chief good fairy, a strong but gentle leader. Her magic is not as powerful as Malevolent’s, but it is sufficient to subvert the worst of Malevolent’s intentions. Her name is a play on the Android phone’s virtual assistant.
Fairy Siri (f): A good fairy, friend and colleague of Alexa and Google. She gives Rosamund the magical gift of beauty, within and without. Her name is a play on the iPhone’s virtual assistant.
Fairy Google (f or m): A good fairy, friend and colleague of Alexa and Siri. She gives Rosamund the magical gift of wit and humour. Her name is a play on the internet search engine, and she/he is a bit grumpy about it.
Elong (m or f – script is written as male, would need minor changes in pronouns): Henchman of Malevolent, straight-man to Musky but still needs good comic timing. Brighter than Musky though, and not really a bad person.
Musky (m or f – script is written as male, would need minor changes in pronouns): Henchman of Malevolent, comic to Elong’s straight-man. Needs good comic timing. Not as bright as Elong though. Actually a bit child-like, and not really a bad person.
Queen Leanna (f): Lovely lady, a little bit lacking in worldly experience – hence she doesn’t realise she’s pregnant until the King points it out. Also, she’s not used to partying and gets a little bit squiffy at the christening. She loves her daughter and hubby fiercely, rules her kingdom fairly and is an all-round kindly wife and mother.
King Steven (m): A nice chap, probably less naïve than the Queen. Protective of his daughter and his kingdom, he rules fairly. He has a bit of a hankering to sometimes have an ordinary life, hence his love of fish and chips, and his desire to occasionally have a quiet night in binge-watching trash entertainment and eating snacks. (Who can blame him?!)
Chives (m): A butler who has lied about his age to get the job, Says he’s 19 but is actually closer to 80. Everyone takes his declared age at face value and treats him like a teenager, asking him to walk miles and climb huge flights of stairs. He’s late for everything, usually appearing after a scene has finished. Good comic timing and facial expressions and body language, not much dialogue.
Courtiers (m or f): Background characters who can react well to the dialogue, sing some of the songs and dance a little.
Dragon: Malevolent transforms into a dragon to fight the Prince
